Detention Review
Disclaimer: Contains spoilers!
Plot Summary: The weirdest group of high school kids deal with the pointlessness of their lives while trying to survive some masked killer.
Review: This movie is weird! It bills itself as a comedy slasher of some sort, but I would say this film's genre is a mess. Each scene plays out much like a parody of a superior film in the similar vein of "Scary Movie" or "Not Another Teen Movie." Unlike those parody movies, however, "Detention" not only fails miserably, but there is no coordination to the movies being parodied. For example, "Scary Movie" obviously made recent horror films their focus, while "Detention" just does whatever movie it wants: Donnie Darko, Scream, Karate Kid, Spiderman, Like Father Like Son, etc. This might have been interesting, but it really makes no sense without some kind of cohesive narrative. On top of that, we are given the most ridiculous dialogue in a pathetic attempt to be witty. They also keep emphasizing the '90s saying "it's the new '80s." This concept could have had a lot of decent jokes or setups, but instead we seem to have a lot of confusion as to what happened in the '90s. There's also some ongoing subplot about aliens taking over the world so I'm leaning toward the notion this film was written by aliens who only have the most vague understanding of script writing. There's a reason why this movie flopped horrifically, and I unfortunately found out why. The acting is bad, the plot is a mess, every scene is stupid, and worst of all, it tries too hard to be smart when it's not. Save yourself a few brain cells, and do not waste your time with this shit.
Notable Moment: Probably the beginning when we see a self-proclaimed "B.I.T.C.H." thankfully get killed. This movie was so dumb even this scene was not done as good as it could have been.
Final Rating: 3.5/10
