Paranormal Activity 2 Review
Disclaimer: Contains spoilers!
Plot Summary: A few months before the events of part one, Katie's sister, Kristi, and her family are being haunted by a demonic force.
Review: There was a lot of hype surrounding the first film, but I believe it delivered; however, there was a lot of hype around the second and it failed to live up to expectations. While this film follows basically the same formula as the first, the scares feel much emptier and it takes so much longer to get going. The scares feel the same as well: for instance, the first had a quija board light on fire out of nowhere, this one had some food sitting on the stove use the same effect while also having another quija board scene. More doors were moving on their own along with other items, and we have another dragged away by the demon scene as well as many more similar feeling scenes. Seeing one and two so close to each other really emphasizes how little new ideas were employed in this sequel. As for the slowness, we see little things here and there for virtually the first 45-60 minutes. This was not acceptable, because it left the plot feeling so boring; there should have been a better escalation in scares. Now your curiosity and expectations may be toyed with on a first viewing so you're not bored, but, like the first PA, repeat viewings reveal how boring it is without that unknowing-factor; unlike part one, this film's sparse scares and lack of creativity brings little enjoyment to repeat viewings. Also annoying was the addition of continuity errors and contrivances due to this sequel being more of a prequel until the last five minutes. For example, Katie is seen many times at Kristi's house discussing their haunting as children, yet in part one there is no references to these conversations or any interaction from Kristi. Why create these errors when you could have maybe one scene that simply says, "Oh Katie, I only get to see you once a month anymore!" or something to that nature to explain away her absence from the first part. Finally, the ridiculous contrivance of the ending is embarrassing. We are led to believe some random nanny knows how to get rid of a demon?! Adding to this is the fact that we get no idea how the nanny knows what she does or how on earth touching a cross to Kristi would transfer the demon to Katie. Overall, it's not necessarily a bad film and may even feel creepy the first go around, but it is so much weaker than part one and really does not stand up to multiple viewings.
Notable Moment: When the possessed Kristi is running around the basement, and we don't know when she will pop out but she will!
Final Rating: 5.5/10
