The Monster Squad Review

Check out my updated review! http://thevagrantrises.blogspot.com/2016/08/updated-review-14-monster-squad.html

Disclaimer: Contains spoilers!

Plot Summary: All of the classic Universal movie monsters are uniting for a plot to take over the world, and only a band of kids called the Monster Squad can stop them!

Review: This is that rare kind of film magic that could only exist in the '80s as studios would never take a gamble now. Growing up, this was my absolute favorite movie! Nowaday, some of the effects have become dated and the '80s references have lost their meaning, but this movie still kicks ass! The group of kids that comprise the Monster Squad are all fantastic. There is at least one scene where each kid gets a chance to shine and face down one of the monsters. My favorite was always Rudy; he was the definition of coolness in the '80s, and he is actually the one that kills most of the monsters. All of their acting is good and the addition of some of their parents helps enhance the more serious nature of the movie. At the same time, the monsters work so perfectly together. This is probably the only movie where the classics really showed off their abilities; Dracula and the Wolfman are virtually invincible except for their notorious weaknesses. I need to give special attention to the Wolfman, because the effects are still my favorite in all werewolf films. The Wolfman looks vicious and his human character has some interesting depth thrown in. Dracula is equally impressive as he masterminds the attempt to seize a magic amulet which can open a gateway to "limbo" and unleash evil upon the world. I know a lot of this plot sounds ridiculous, but the film finds a way to pull it all together excellently. This is a true '80s gem that I feel bad many missed out on. It has great effects, good acting from the kids, and an awesome story with lots of imagination and creativity. Definitely go out and watch this one as it has gained a cult following.

Notable Moment: When Rudy finally kills the Wolfman and he thanks Rudy for ending the curse. "I told you...only one way to kill a werewolf." You can say that again!

Final Rating: 9/10
